The 2010 season will be facing it’s last race this weekend. The Yas Marina circuit will be the host of the nineteenth round of the GPO championship. With both driver titles decided last race, just the Constructors title is at stake in Abu Dhabi. In Challenge, GRIDLine UK leads 21 points over Rothmans Racing, whilst Rice Racing tries to avoid losing more then fifteen points this race, to make sure they will take atleast one price home this season.

The Track

Yas Marina Circuit is 5.554 meters long and counts 21 corners. Twelve of them bend to the left. Drivers will drive this track anti-clockwise. It’s also called the Arabic Monaco.

The Abu Dhabi races ‘special’ treat is the time of day it will be held. The race will start at daylight, but it shall finish under artificial lights. The best overtaking opportunities this time will be turn 8 and 11. Special aspects of this track are the hotel, which was built over the track between turn 17 and 18 and the pit-exit which flows beneath the track.

Most Expensive

Yas Marina circuit is by far the most expensive track ever built for Formula races, roughly 1 milliard dollars. An entire Island had to be erupted from the sea. Also a hotel was built inside the racetrack. Also the lights around the track took a major part of the price, namely 250 million dollars.

The Schedule

Challenge will be brought live to you by Matthew Weston and Simon Smith. The broadcast will start at 18:45GMT, just in time for qualifying. The race will go green at 19:30GMT. The Sprint series will qualify at 9:00 GMT, with their race starting at 9:45 GMT.

The next round of GrandPrix Online’s championship will be held in Northamptonshire, Great Britain. The circuit of Silverstone is exactly the halfway point for this season. In Challenge Drazen Cokor leads with 92 points, whilst in the Sprint series has Malcolm Rice still as leader with 144 points.

The Track

Silverstones new lay-out made the track a little longer as it used to be, namely 5.901 meters long. This means the laps to be completed drop to 52 for Challenge and 26 for sprint. The track is on an old airfield. It is famous for it’s flowing corners like Maggots, Becketts and Chapel. The fast Bridge-corner has disappeared in the new lay out, drivers have to make a fast right turn in Abbey instead of left, leading to the brand new Arena part of the track, and return to the old track at Brooklands.

Silverstone after all

Last years GrandPrix on this track seemed the last Formula 1 race there. Donington Park should be the host of the 2010 Grand Prix onward. Donington couldn’t get the financial part of the deal closed, which led to a return on this amazing track. The next seventeen years, Silverstone hosts the Grand Prix of Great Britain. A lot of spectators are happy with this outcome

This year will venue a brand new lay-out at the Silverstone track. Some corners were sacrificed to benefit the Motor racers safety, and were replaced by fast sweeping corners and a hairpin. Sceptics were weary about these changes, because Silverstone was perfect the way it was, according to them. Are these changes really that good? GPO Press had the opportunity to walk around the new track and experience it.

What is new?

The last race Silverstone venued, drivers had to take a left turn into Abbey. The tarmac between Abbey and Priory won’t be driven again this year, as Bridge corner was dangerous to motor drivers. Now drivers have to make a fast right turn leading up to a fast, but not really challenging section, ended by the new “Arrowhead” hairpin. It is this corner that probably allows overtaking moves.

Drivers quotes

Michael Pieneman from GRIDLine Racing thinks the new layout is challenging.”At first I thought they had ruined another track, but after a few laps I noticed that you need to get reaquinted to. It has some extra overtaking places now, and a higher speed comparing to the old section, which results in better racing, because setups need to be adjusted accordingly.”

GRIDLine Boss Stuart Fields had a shorter remark: “ The new lay-out is superb! I love it!“

Round up

All in all, the new layout is not the most challenging aspect of Silverstone, but in general it is a nice new feature, which the drivers appreciate. In a few days we will know who shall be crowned as King of New Silverstone. We will leave you now with a lap around this new track:

Round nine of the GrandPrix Online championship will be held at the relatively new Valencia Circuit, after a short trip to North America. Both Cordes and Rice are looking to match their victories in this Grand Prix, but the competition is fierce.

The Track

The Circuito Urbano de Valencia is 5.440 meters long and features a total of 25 corners. Thirteen of them bend to the right. Challenge drivers will be driving 57 laps, whilst the Sprint drivers have to complete a total of 29 laps around this difficult and demanding track.

The Circuito Urbano de Valencia is not famous for the spectacular races we saw in the past years. Perhaps the first visit of the Grand Prix Online paddock will change this. Only two corners have been marked as overtaking possibility, namely corner 12 and 17.

The Race

Challenge Qualify will start at 18:45 GMT, whilst the qualifying session for the sprint race will be the next Sunday at 9:00 GMT.
